When Water is Pouring Through the Ceiling
When a washing machine hose ruptures or a pipe freezes, water flows into your home at 10 to 15 gallons per minute. Searching blindly for the shut-off valve while panicking can cost twenty minutes and thirty thousand dollars in structural water damage.
Where to Look
The main water shut-off is almost always located along the perimeter exterior wall closest to where the municipal water main enters the property—frequently in the basement, utility closet, or garage.
Ball Valve vs Gate Valve
A modern quarter-turn ball valve features a straight lever handle: when parallel to the pipe, water is ON; when perpendicular, water is completely OFF. Hang a bright neon identification tag on the valve handle so any family member can find it instantly.
If a ball valve handle is stiff, do not use excessive hammer force that could break the brass stem. Use steady hand torque or call a plumber.
