How to Spot a Tripped Breaker
A tripped breaker will not point to 'OFF'. It rests in a spring-loaded center position between 'ON' and 'OFF'. To reset it, you must firmly push the switch all the way to 'OFF' until it clicks, and only then flip it back to 'ON'.

Many breaker panel directories are faded or incorrectly handwritten. Spend thirty minutes with a partner and a plug-in lamp, turning off one breaker at a time, to clearly label which outlets correspond to each room.
Never touch the main electrical service lugs inside the panel. If you see charred plastic, smell ozone, or hear buzzing, back away and call a licensed electrician immediately.
